KEARNEY- Two Rivers Public Health Department received a grant through US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that allows certified TRPHD employees to test homes for lead-based paint hazards, and make repairs, including mold remediation, pest control, and radon mitigation systems, to dwellings to make it safer through a Healthy Homes inspection.
Through this funding TRPHD will be able to train contractors and who will work in conjunction with our lead risk accessors to find hazards, within our 7-county district, and work toward lead abatement and control of those hazards, at NO COST to the homeowner.
To qualify:
- Home/dwelling must be built before 1978
- Must have child under 6 living in the home or frequently visiting
- Household annual income must be below 80% of the area median (based on county)
- Homeowners and tenants can apply, landlords must contribute 10% to the costs of repairs.

Why is lead harmful to health?
- There is no safe level of lead. Lead can cause many health effects:
- Children usually get lead poisoning by ingesting lead while they play.
▪ Lead poisoning in children usually leads to symptoms like stomach aches and behavioral problems (developmental delay, irritability, learning difficulties).
▪ Lead poisoning as a child can have lifelong impacts. - Adults usually get lead poisoning by inhaling lead while they work.
▪ Lead poisoning as an adult usually leads to problems with the reproductive system, joints, and kidneys
- Children usually get lead poisoning by ingesting lead while they play.
