Secretary of State Bob Evnen says the referendum on LB 753, the Opportunity Scholarship Act, will not appear on the general election ballot in November.
Lawmakers passed a subsequent measure earlier this year, LB 1402, that changed the funding mechanism for scholarships toward private and parochial school attendance, with a provision repealing LB 753.
In a news release, Evnen said he made the decision following consultation with Attorney General Mike Hilgers.
Support our Schools Nebraska and the State Education Association called 1402 another attempt to prevent Nebraska voters from voicing their opinion on the subject, and they face a mid-July deadline to get a referendum petition on that law qualified to appear on the November ballot.
