Fire departments from a five county area responded to a wildfire Sunday afternoon in northeast Buffalo County. Shelton Fire Chief Taryn Hawks said they got the call around 2:30pm for a fire in a soybean field that was being harvested. The fire apparently started from a combine operating in that field. Hawks says with the high winds “it was just a wind-driven fire going north.”
Hawks says it was estimated to be about a half-mile wide and two-and-a-half miles long. A barn and some farm equipment was destroyed in its path. About five tractors with discs were also involved in containing the fire. High winds were a factor in fighting the fire.
Hawks says they have responded to a few other fires this year that originated from combines. Noting the ongoing dry conditions he said “it’s just that type of year”.
