I-80 Traffic stop near York nets arrests and two pounds of meth

York County, Neb. — Two people were arrested and booked on numerous charges after a York County sheriff’s deputy found two pounds of methamphetamine during a traffic stop.

A Sheriff’s Deputy stopped a vehicle on Interstate 80 west of York for multiple traffic violations on Friday. During the traffic stop, the deputy became suspicious of the male driver and female passenger and released “Justice,” his police service dog. The service dog alerted to the smell of a controlled substance coming from inside the vehicle.

The Sheriff’s department says a search of the vehicle was conducted, during which deputies found two pounds of methamphetamine, several knives and drug paraphernalia.

As deputies continued searching the vehicle, the woman slipped out of her handcuffs and began to discard drug paraphernalia located on her person in the patrol unit. The man also reportedly began to slam his hand repeatedly against the patrol unit window, causing damage.

The driver, 36-year-old Andrew Juarez, of Holdrege, was arrested on suspicion of possession of more than 140 grams of methamphetamine, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, no drug tax stamp, criminal mischief, auxiliary lights violation, open container and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The passenger, 39-year-old Sonia Martinez, of Hastings, was arrested on suspicion of possession of more than 140 grams of methamphetamine, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person, tampering with physical evidence, no drug tax stamp, attempted escape, false reporting, carrying a concealed weapon, open container and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Both Juarez and Martinez were placed in the York County Jail.
