ARNOLD – A Nebraska Department of Transportation highway worker was killed in an accident in a work zone on Highway 92 Wednesday morning.

The Custer County Sheriff’s Office said the accident was reported just after 6 a.m. a short distance west of Arnold.

According to a release, a 67-year-old Stapleton man was driving east in a Freightliner semi pulling a livestock trailer. The semi struck a road construction broom sweeper driven by a 56-year-old Broken Bow man and pushed it into the south ditch. The semi came to a stop in the north ditch.

The driver of the broom sweeper was transported to Great Plains Health in North Platte, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the semi suffered only minor injuries.

The semi driver was wearing a seat belt. It’s unknown whether the construction worker was. Names of those involved have not yet been released.

The highway was closed for several hours before reopening after noon on Wednesday.

The Custer County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Nebraska State Patrol, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Lincoln County Attorney’s Office, Arnold Fire and Rescue, and Trumbull Towing.
