OVERTON, NE – Non-profit organization Little Eagles Learning Center held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday, April 10, 2024, for a 3,467 square foot childcare center. The center will be located at 403 6th St, Overton, NE 68863, across the street from the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where the LELC childcare program is currently housed.

After conducting a survey in Overton and surrounding area, the LELC Board quickly realized there was a dire need for childcare in the community. Board President Brooke Puffer says the survey found that 35 kids in the area needed childcare and this new facility will help close that gap, as well as create jobs.

Puffer adds, this facility will provide quality early childhood education.

The first stages of construction for the childcare center will begin next week, with projected completion by the end of 2024 and operating by January of 2025.

This new facility will include:

  • Two separate 1,290 square foot open-concept childcare areas will both accommodate 12 children.
  • A kitchen, crib area, restrooms, and laundry room will accompany the separate childcare areas.
  • A shared indoor play area that will allow children to run and play, especially during winter months when the weather is not ideal for outside play
  • A community space that will accommodate approximately 16 people for various events
  • Outdoor space that allows the children to use their imagination and increase their developing motor skills

With the cost of construction, furnishings and appliances, as well as an operating reserve, Puffer says the total cost will be $1 million, and they have reached 60% of their goal. LELC has been able to raise the funds completely through community support.
