Gothenburg Volleyball earns gritty win at home over Lexington

GOTHENBURG – The Gothenburg Swedes volleyball team hosted their Dawson County rival in Lexington and had to work hard for a four set victory (25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 25-14).

Both teams struggled with errors both from the attack and service line in the first two sets going back and forth. Sydney Reutlinger-Maravilla helped the Minutemaids cause, with seven kills through the first two sets, while Lindly Anderson had eight kills in the second set alone to help lead Gothenburg to the second set win. In the third, Lexington got ahead big, holding a 19-11 lead at one point. Gothenburg fought back and eventually tied the game, but Lexington held on to win 25-23 in the third to force a fifth. The fourth set was all Gothenburg. After Lexington scored the opening point of the set, Gothenburg would score 16 unanswered points to pull away and eventually win the set 25-14. Anderson had another big set with seven kills, while Peyton Hilbers had four service aces in the set.

Hannah Scharff led the way for Lexington with 11 kills, with Rylee Church adding nine and Reutlinger-Maravilla with eight kills. Gothenburg was led by Anderson who finished with 20 kills and three blocks. Halsey Thomalla had 12 kills, one ace and three blocks, while Grace Evert added nine kills as well.

Lexington falls to 4-17 on the year and will be at the Central Conference Tournament in York starting Friday, while Gothenburg improves to 17-8 and will be at Holdrege on Tuesday.
