GOTHENBURG – The Gothenburg Melons Seniors team used a big six run first inning to down Dawson County foe Platte Valley Auto Lexington 11-0 in five innings on Friday night.

KRVN’s Jon Willis spoke postgame with assistant coach Ethan McKenna

The Melons jumped ahead early thanks to a six run first where all nine batters came up. Aiden McKenna got things started with a bang with a RBI double to score the first round, and then three straight four pitch walks combined with wild pitches from Lexington allowed for the big inning. From there, Gothenburg continued to add on. They scored two in the second and fourth, and one in the third. Lexington had RBI opportunities, but left five total runners on base. Jackson Schwanz pitched all five innings for the Melons, and even with a high pitch count was able to find a way for the shutout. Things ended after the top of the fifth and the Melons won 11-0.

Schwanz allowed no runs on one hit with seven strikeouts and five walks. Aiden McKenna was 2-3 with a RBI and two runs, while Preston Nichols was 2-3 with a triple, RBI, and three runs scored. For Lexington, Rigo Tercero had a nice relief appearance allowing five runs over three innings and striking out three, while Croix Leibert reached base twice on walks and stole two bases for Lexington. Jonah Bryan had the lone hit for Lexington in the game, reaching base both times he was up.
