Gothenburg Melons Cruise to Big Win over Platte Valley Auto Lexington

LEXINGTON – The Gothenburg Melons legion baseball team scored 18 runs in the third and fourth inning to down Lexington 24-8 in five innings on Thursday night.

Things started out well for Lexington in the first, forcing Gothenburg to go three up three down in the first, and then scored three runs in the first thanks to RBI singles from Drew Hanson and Owen Bauer. The Melons had three straight extra base hits in the third to tie the game at three. It was tied heading into the third, when Gothenburg would jump ahead big, scoring eight runs in the third thanks to five Lexington errors. Lexington would answer with two of their own, but then Gothenburg had another big inning scoring ten runs in the fourth. The inning was headlined by a bases clearing double from Carson Farr. Five different players finished with RBI’s in the inning. From there, Gothenburg would cruise late and win 24-8 in five innings.

Preston Nichols got the win for Gothenburg, going 2.1 innings allowing five total runs on three hits with four strikeouts and seven walks. Farr went 4-5 with four RBI’s and four runs scored. Jackson Schwanz finished a home run shy of the cycle, going 4-4 with three runs and a RBI. Hanson took the loss for Lexington, going 2.2 innings allowing eleven runs, only five being earned, with three strikeouts and one walk. Hanson was great at the plate, going 3-3 with two RBI’s and three runs.

Gothenburg has won the season series as well, after taking the earlier season matchup 11-0.

Lexington falls to 0-6 and is back in action tomorrow at Overton. Gothenburg improves to 3-7 and is at Imperial on Saturday.
