Gothenburg earns huge win on Senior Night

GOTHENBURG – The Gothenburg Swedes boys basketball team survived at home on Friday night in the regular season finale against the top rated team in C1, defeating Ogallala 52-50.

Gothenburg got off to a high flying start in the first quarter, scoring 15 points in the first thanks to six different players scoring in the period. Ogallala would answer with a 15 point quarter of their own in the second, and Gothenburg held a slim 23-22 lead at the break.

The offenses got rolling in the third quarter, with Gothenburg outscoring Ogallala 17-16 in the period. Edan Gain scored 12 points in the quarter for Ogallala, while Kooper Koehn scored nine for Gothenburg. Early in the third for Ogallala, star sophomore Sawyer Smith went down with an injury and wouldn’t return for the rest of the game. The game went back and forth in the fourth quarter, with Ogallala taking a lead at one point. Ogallala had a chance to win the game at the buzzer, but missed a go ahead three, and Gothenburg survived winning it 52-50.

Gain led the way scoring wise for Ogallala, scoring 14 points. The Indians were 7-13 from the free throw line and committed 10 turnovers. Gothenburg was led by Trey Stevens, scoring 18 points. Gothenburg was 6-11 from the free throw line and had 12 turnovers. On senior night, the seniors scored 41 of the teams total 52 points.

Ogallala finishes the regular season at 20-3, and will be the number one seed in the C1-11 subdistrict. They will play the winner of Chase County/Broken Bow on Tuesday. Gothenburg finishes the regular season at 16-6, and will take on rival Cozad in the C1-11 subdistrict game on Tuesday.
