Gothenburg breaks four game losing streak with dominating win

GOTHENBURG – In a get right game for two teams that had lost four straight, Gothenburg rolled at home over Holdrege 55-7.

The first half was a story of big plays for the Swedes, scoring early and often. On their second play from scrimmage, quarterback Landon Mroczek had a 48-yard rushing touchdown. They kept it going on their next drive with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Mroczek to Logan Feather. Evan Johnson had a two-yard rushing touchdown, Feather had another receiving touchdown with this one being 70-yards on a one play drive, and a 14-yard rushing touchdown from Torren Wind. Holdrege punted five times and missed a 46-yard field goal to give the Swedes a 35-0 lead at the break.

With the second half in running clock mode, there wasn’t as many drives from both teams. Gothenburg scored on their first drive of the second half, thanks to a 52-yard rushing touchdown from Jackson Daum. On the next drive for Holdrege, Wind blocked a punt that was returned by Axtyn Jesseph for a touchdown. Gothenburg scored once more thanks to a two-yard rushing touchdown from freshman Maddox Gilligan. Holdrege wouldn’t be shut out, scoring once late in the third on a 40-yard rushing touchdown from Kegan Steinke.

Gothenburg had 496 total yards of offense, 167 through the air and 329 on the ground. Mroczek finished 5-5 with 167 yards and two touchdowns, also carrying the ball three times for 78 yards and a score. Johnson had 11 carries for 67 yards as well. Holdrege had 172 total yards of offense, while Steinke had 11 carries for 65 yards and a score.

Holdrege falls to 2-5 on the year and will host Cozad next week. Gothenburg improves to 3-4 and will take on Minden on the road next week, a game we’ll bring you on 880 KRVN.
