Frontier County, Neb. — Frontier County Sheriff Adam Cooper has submitted his resignation.

His intention is contained in a letter dated, Thursday, March 28, submitted to the Frontier County Clerk and Frontier County Attorney.

In it he said, “To Whom it may concern, On this date (3-28-2024) I, Adam Cooper am officially resigning from my position as the Sheriff of Frontier County effective immediately.”

The letter does not state a reason for his action.

Frontier County Attorney Whitney Schroeder says, at this time, the “interim” Sheriff is Frontier County Chief Deputy Shawn Rupp.

Schroeder provided a copy of the statute governing such matters, which states: “Upon the resignation of the county official, pursuant to Neb. Rev. Stat 32-567, a vacancy in any other elected county office is filled by appointment made by the county board. Unless otherwise provided by law, all vacancies shall be filled within forty-five days after the vacancy occurs unless good cause is shown that the requirement imposes an undue burden (Section 32-574).

Schroeder says it’s likely the Frontier County Board will discuss the resignation and how to proceed in filling the position at their regularly scheduled meeting this Friday, April 5, at 9:00 a.m.

Adam Cooper ran for the Republican nomination for Frontier County Sheriff in the May 2022 Primary Election, receiving the most votes over two other Republican candidates.

He then advanced to the November General Election, where he did not face any opposition.
