(Washington, D.C. – September 19, 2023) – Farmers and ranchers often struggle to change their management to adopt new conservation practices. The current technical and financial assistance delivery system governed by the Farm Bill is helpful in overcoming the barriers they face, but it leaves gaps in support and is often too general to be useful. Farmers seek information from other farmers about what works and what does not. This place-based knowledge gained from experience and experimentation with new practices is essential. But the formal or informal places where farmers connect to share this information are few and far between and receive spotty funding if they are funded at all. Senator Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM) and Jerry Moran’s (R-KS) recently introduced bill, if included in the Farm Bill, aims to change all of that.
Who: Senator Lujan, National Young Farmers Coalition, American Farmland Trust, and researchers and farmers from Michigan, New Mexico, Kansas, and New England.
What: A virtual briefing on the recently introduced bipartisan Farmer to Farmer Education Act which, if included in the farm bill, would support more farmer-to-farmer conservation education to help producers achieve long term conservation practice adoption. Researchers and experts will talk about what works, and farmers will share their personal experiences.
