Elm Creek falls in first round of State

LINCOLN – After being down by 15 at the half, the Elm Creek boys basketball team stormed back, but had their rally fall short, dropping their first round D-2 State Tournament game 58-50 to Maywood-Hayes Center.

The Buffaloes got out to a hot start, jumping ahead 6-0. The Wolves didn’t score for over five minutes to start the game, but got things going late in the first, to be ahead 8-6 after one quarter. Jerry Ingison scored ten second quarter points to help Maywood-Hayes Center pull away and lead 30-15 at the half.

Elm Creek came out in the second half firing, outscoring the Wolves 19-8 in the third quarter. Kade Sindt scored seven third quarter points and Quin Oberg scored five third quarter points to help the Buffaloes cut the lead to four. Elm Creek then would cut the lead to one, 45-44 midway through the fourth. Kolten Keim scored eight fourth quarter points and finished with 12 to help cut the lead. From there though, the Buffaloes turned the ball over a couple times and Ingison scored 19 fourth quarter points, including going 9-11 from the free throw line in the final quarter to help Maywood-Hayes Center pull away and win 58-50.

Both Sindt and Oberg scored 13 points to lead the way for Elm Creek. The Buffaloes went 14-22 from the free throw line and committed 13 turnovers. Ingison led the way for Maywood-Hayes Center with 31 points. The Wolves were 17-22 from the free throw line, and had 19 turnovers.

Maywood-Hayes Center improves to 23-3 and will take on the winner of SEM/Walthill on Friday at 7:45. Elm Creek finishes their season with a 16-9 record.
