Eagles grounded in state title game

LINCOLN – The Southern Valley offense struggled in their first state championship game, falling to Pender 39-25 Saturday morning.

Southern Valley would only score six first half points, didn’t score a field goal in the second quarter and went over 10 minutes between the first and second quarters without a point. The defense played well enough that it kept the Eagles in the game, only trailing 14-6 at the half. Both teams would come to life offensively in the third quarter, but Pender still outscored Southern Valley 11-10. The offensive woes continued in the fourth quarter for the Eagles, only adding eight more points wile Pender found success from the free throw line to score 15 points and win their second straight state championship.

Pender shot 42% from the field while only knocking in four triples. They went 13-18 from the free throw line. Maya Dolliver led the team with 16 points. Avery Wegner and Hadley Walsh each scored nine points. Southern Valley shot 24% from the field, sunk two three pointers and went 5-7 from the free throw line. Ann Bose finished with nine points, eight rebounds and five steals. Adi Hunt added nine points and Tori Bose scored six points with 10 rebounds.

Pender won their third state title while Southern Valley finished as state runner up for the first time in school history.
