North Platte- Overton saved its best for last this spring as the Eagles golf team claimed the Class D title on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles won the championship going away with a team score of 655. After shooting a 336 to grab the first round lead they were even better in the second round shooting a 319 as they won by 11 strokes over Hitchcock County. Leading the way were seniors Alex Banzhaf and Braden Fleischman. Bazhaf finished in 4th place at +9, Fleischman tied for 5th at +11. Brody Fleischman finished tied for 19th at +20 and Eli Luther tied for 54th. Jace Jefferies also competed for the Eagles this week. The victory continued Overton’s great run over the last three years as the Eagles won the title in 2022, were the state runner up last year and then claimed this year’s title which is the third in school history. FKC rival Loomis finished 5th at the event. Leading the Wolves was Tyson Essex who tied for second with Hitchcock County’s Jack Baker at +7. Sandy Creek’s Jake Dane was the Class D state champion at +5.
In Class C, Kearney Catholic repeated as state champs as the Stars won the title with a team score of 322 which was one stroke better than Columbus Scotus. St. Paul was 3rd, while GICC was fourth, while Doniphan-Trumbull placed 5th. Sam Wells of St. Paul defeated Nash Malone of Kearney Catholic for the title in a playoff after they each had rounds of 72. Also medaling for the Stars were Tate Redinger who was 13th and Jackson Dunham who tied for 14th. Also competing for the Stars were Will Hogeland and Cale Krohn. Due to the heavy rain on Tuesday the Class C event was just an 18 hole tournament.
