E. coli Bacteria Detected in Cottonmill Swim Lake

KEARNEY- As of Monday July 1^st, 2024, Cottonmill Park Swim Lake has tested positive for E. coli bacteria above the risk-based guidelines. 

When E. coli bacteria levels test above 235 colonies/100 ml a Health Alert is not issued. However, conditions are at a higher risk to human health when swimming. Concentrations of bacteria change rapidly based on many factors, including weather condition, therefore signs will not be posted with these higher levels. TRPHD recommends everyone use their own judgement when considering recreational activities at Cottonmill Swim Lake.

What should I do if I find the levels are above the risk-based guidelines?

• Avoid any situation which could cause you to swallow lake water
• If you have been in contact with lake water, shower afterward
• If you have been in contact with lake water, wash hands before eating
