Cozad – One of the more storied high school softball rivalries was renewed on Thursday night as the Cozad Haymakers hosted the Gothenburg Swedes. The Haymakers used a strong pitching performance from Madison Sayer and consistent hitting throughout the line up to beat the Swedes 13-2.
Gothenburg got out to an early lead when Kinzey Winney singled to right field scoring Dakota Werner in the second inning. The flood gates opened up in the bottom of the second when Cozad five times starting off when Claytyn Fleharty scored on a single by Mallory Munster. They took a 5-1 lead into the third inning. The Swedes scored one more time before the door was shut by Sayer and later by Munster who came in to relieve her.
The Haymakers scored nine times in the next inning to win going away. Brittlyn Bussing went 3-3 on the night scoring twice with three runs batted in, Fleharty scored three times in the win. Sayer got the win in the circle while Bri Houchin was tagged with the loss for Gothenburg.
The Haymakers improve to 3-3 with the win, the Swedes fall to 1-4.
