Cozad Girls Track Preview

Cozad Girls Track Preview
March 13th, 2023 | Jon Willis

COZAD- The Haymaker girls track season is excited to get the 2023 spring season underway, with some returning experience.

Head Coach Melvin Botts says he is excited for the upcoming season, and that it should be a fun one. The numbers are up this year which should give Cozad more flexibility in our sprints, and middle distance.  Botts also likes the work the vaulters and high jumpers are doing right now.  The Haymakers bring back multiple state qualifiers, so there is some peer leadership that they can look up to and help them along.  Karyn Burkholder is looking strong again in the 300 hurdles where she placed 3rd at state a year ago, and will take on new events this season. Cozad brings back Mallory Applegate from a knee injury that kept her out last year, after qualifying for state as a sophomore.  Makaia Baker is back who qualified in multiple events last season, as is Blair Brennan who transferred in and ran in Omaha last season.  They also have many newcomers who Coach Botts expect will contribute this year. Leonie Neufeld is a good sprinter and Botts is hoping she rounds into a solid jumper for us.  Coach Botts believes if they can avoid injuries, that Cozad will be very competitive this year.
