Crews were reportedly making progress on a large grass fire this afternoon between Valentine and Crookston north of Highway 20. The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency says that it’s about 20 acres in size as of 3:00pm Thursday and appears to have been caused from harvest activities. The Nebraska Forest Service Single Engine Air Tanker Base has been activated to assist with the fire.

Meanwhile, the Cherry County Sheriff’s Office says that those living near the Highway to be ready to evacuate. Deputies have gone door to door to all known residences that currently appear to be in the line of the fire but residents should be aware of changing winds. They are asking people to not travel west on Highway 20 outside of necessary travel between Valentine and Crookston. The Sheriff’s Office says they will close Highway 20 if necessary.

Also, if you are not fighting the fire to stay off of Jackson Road. People parking on the shoulders to see the fire are interrupting emergency response.
