Lincoln, Neb. — Following the hot summer, the Office of the Capitol Commission is thinking cool December thoughts.

Christmas is coming and Capitol Staff need an Official State Christmas Tree.

For over 70 years, on the second Sunday of December, the Capitol Rotunda has served as the backdrop for the tree lighting ceremony, musical performances and more.

What was once a way to honor and support those stationed at the Lincoln Air Base in the aftermath of World War II nas now become an eagerly awaited tradition for many Nebraskan’s and their families

Heather Dinslage, groundskeeper supervisor for the Office of the Capitol Commission, is looking for a tree donation from within a 50 to 70-mile radius of Lincoln.

Dinslage says ideally the Capitol Christmas tree is 20-25 feet tall with a maximum girth (width) of 15 feet, depending on thickness and size of branches.

Anyone wishing to have their tree considered for use as the Official State Christmas Tree should contact Heather Dinslage at 402.937.2891 or email
