BROKEN BOW – Broken Bow High School will offer a new varsity sport next year after the school board approved the addition of girls wrestling.

The board voted unanimously during Monday’s meeting to add girls wrestling for the 2024-25 school year.

The Nebraska School Activities Association has officially sanctioned girls wrestling for the past two academic years and has seen an explosion in popularity.

According to the NSAA website, there were 168 high school girls wrestling team in the state this year. Those included Ansley-Litchfield, Anselmo-Merna, Arcadia/Loup City, South Loup, Sandhills/Thedford, Sandhills Valley, Sumner-Eddyville-Miller, Ord and Lexington.

The NSAA is widely expected to vote next month to add a second classification for girls wrestling, doubling the number of girls who qualify for the state tournament. That will likely lead to changes in the format for next year’s tournament, which has seen the demand for tickets in recent years exceed the CHI Health Center’s capacity.

Broken Bow has seen plenty of success in boys wrestling, winning the Class C state championship in 2023 and finishing runner-up this year in addition to winning three duals championships since 2018.
