Attempted murder & arson charges filed in house fire

Cozad, Neb. — A Cozad woman faces charges of Attempted First Degree Murder and First Degree Arson in connection with a house fire and injuries to individuals on the scene.

50 year old Brenda S. Lawrance was arraigned Monday in Dawson County Court on the charges and is being held on $500,000 bond, 10-percent surety.

Court documents allege the defendant intentionally started three fires in a dwelling at 1312 F Street in Cozad on Sunday while two other people were inside the residence.

The State Fire Marshal was called to the residence to determine the cause of the fire.

Cozad Police arrested the defendant shortly before noon on Sunday.

Court papers allege that when two people tried to stop Lawrance, she used a plumbers torch and an aerosol can as a flame thrower causing injuries to both subjects.

Lawrance was arraigned in Dawson County Court Monday on two counts of Attempted First Degree murder, both Class II Felonies; First Degree Arson, a Class II Felony; and two counts of Second Degree Assault, a Class IIA Felony.

Bond conditions include no contact with the two injured persons.

A preliminary hearing in the case is set for Oct. 26 at 11:00 a.m.
