Lincoln, Neb. — A motion to override Gov. Jim Pillen’s veto of a bill that would authorize Syringe Service Programs fell three votes short on Tuesday.

LB307, referred to as the “safe needles” bill, was passed by the Nebraska Legislature last week before being vetoed March 4. The vote was 27-20, but 30 votes were needed for the override to be successful. That was the number of senators who supported the bill on its final vote.

Governor Jim Pillen issued the following statement upon the Nebraska Legislature taking up a vote to override LB 307, introduced by Senator Megan Hunt:

“I appreciate that state senators took the time to evaluate LB 307 and took due notice of concerns that caused me to veto the bill. We need to invest in less harmful ways to combat drug usage and disease transmission that are in line with Nebraska values. I look forward to working with our state senators on those strategies in the next session.”
