Amherst shoots past SEM in sub-district final

SUMNER – The Amherst girls basketball team rode a hot shooting night to victory Thursday, beating Sumner-Eddyville-Miller 70-54 in the D1-10 girls sub-district final.

Amherst came out firing and knocked down six three pointers in the first quarter to jump to a double digit lead. SEM cut the deficit to six going into halftime, but struggled with Mikah O’Neill hobbled by an ankle injury.

Amherst started the second half on a 10-0 run to make the game a runaway. They finished with 11 total three pointers made.

Grace John led the onslaught with five of those threes to finish with 17 points. Hannah Herrick scored 13 while Morgan Ourada and Payton Cast added ten each.

Jaycelyn Hoos drilled eight triples for SEM to tally 26 points and 12 rebounds. Taryn Arbuthnot added 18 points and 11 boards.

With the win Amherst clinched its spot in the district finals next Friday.
