Alma Football dominates in first win of the season

ALMA – The Alma Cardinals and the Southern Valley Eagles battled on Friday night as both teams looked for their first win of the season, with Alma dominating Southern Valley 50-0.

Southern Valley got off to a nice start, driving down the field on 12 plays with 48 yards, but stuttered and turned the ball over on downs. Alma immediately answered with a quick drive of their own, with Zavier Mitchell rushing it in from a yard out to give Alma an early lead. From there, Mitchell and the offense would roll. Mitchell had two other rushing touchdowns of 47-yards and 22-yards. Near the end of the half, Mitchell had passing touchdowns of 21-yards to Isaiah Neal and a 51-yard touchdown pass to Miles Ford. Southern Valley had two more turnover on downs and a fumble to help Alma lead 36-0 at the break.

Running clock started in the second half, with Alma scoring twice more on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to Zane Clark and a 76-yard jet pass touchdown from backup quarterback West Bennett to Ford. Southern Valley had a pair of 11 plus play drives in the second half that ended in two more turnover on downs for a total of five in the game. Alma cruised to the 50-0 win.

Mitchell led the way for Alma with 12 carries for 147 yards and three rushing touchdowns, also going 6-8 for 121 yards and three passing touchdowns. Alma had 25 plays for 403 yards. Southern Valley ran 63 plays 236 yards, and were led by Sam Bantam who had 26 carries for 126 yards.

Alma improves to 1-4 on the year, and will host Arapahoe next week. Southern Valley falls to 0-5 and will be on the road at Hi-Line next week, a game you can hear on 880 KRVN.
