Responders handled two separate fires Thursday afternoon in rural Franklin County. Franklin County Sheriff Bryon Detlefsen says one was reported at 3:56pm as a grass fire just west of Bloomington on 27 Road south of Highway 136. The Franklin Fire Department, Quad Cities Fire Group as well as Sheriff’s Deputies responded and upon arrival more Fire Departments were requested for mutual aid due to the weather conditions and structures that were in close proximity to the fire. In total 23 Fire Departments responded and Troopers from the Nebraska State Patrol, and a officer with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service assisted Sheriff’s Deputies in traffic control. Approximately 30 acres were burned before that fire was extinguished.
While firefighters were on the scene, another fire was reported 4:39pm in the Naponee Fire District on 22 ½ road southeast of Naponee. Fire Fighters were sent from the Bloomington fire to assist with the Naponee fire. Approximately 50 acres were burned.
Both fires had been extinguished and all Fire Units left both scenes by 10:00pm. Sheriff Detlefsen said the fires were handled efficiently due to the numbers of Firefighters, Emergency Personnel, Law Enforcement, Dispatch and Farmers in the area that provided tractors and discs.
Sheriff Detelefsen says there was another fire south of Naponee last Friday on 23rd Road that mainly affected pasture.
There were no injuries or loss of structures were reported. The investigation into the fires is being conducted by the Nebraska State Fire Marshals office.
