Betty June (Sheets) Schmidt, age 86 of Cozad
June 1, 1936 - April 1, 2023

Betty June (Sheets) Schmidt was the fifth of ten children born to Claude and Etta Marie (Wilson) Sheets.

Born June 1, 1936 in Arnold, NE Betty departed this life to join her parents, siblings and grandbabies April 1, 2023.

She graduated from Cozad High School in 1954.

Betty was united in marriage with Orville Schmidt in Elm Creek, NE on August 27, 1954. Betty and Orville had 4 children; Dan, Jim, Scott and her favorite, Darla.

After years of being a stay at home mom, Betty went to work as a school bus driver in Gretna and later Omaha Public Schools for 24 years.

Family was the most important part of Betty’s life, spending as much time as possible with her siblings in Cozad. “Aunt” Betty became the matriarch of the Sheets Family and loved the Sheets’ Family Reunions. With 10 Sheets and their spouses and 34 cousins, the Sheets family gatherings were always festive. Orville and Betty also spent years traveling all over the United States and Europe to visit family.

Betty began roller skating at a young age and later in life blamed that for her aching knees. Orville and Betty spent many years square dancing and were members of the Wheeling 8s club in Gretna.

Betty was a member of Ruth Circle of Gretna United Methodist Church and later became active in Cozad VFW Auxiliary Post 890. She also enjoyed The Cozad “Betty Club” and volunteering at the 100th Meridian Museum.

Betty was a very resourceful woman who spent many hours sewing clothes for herself and her family. Hobbies she enjoyed were painting ceramics, crocheting, quilting and going to garage sales.

A memorial service will be held at Fort McPherson Cemetery, Maxwell, NE at 2:00PM on Friday, April 28, 2023 followed by a gathering at the Cozad Grand Generation Center, 410 W 9th St, Cozad, NE.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity: Alzheimer’s Association, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, National Foundation for Cancer Research or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Claude B Sheets, Etta Marie Wilcox and step dad Jesse Wilcox, nine siblings, Claude Jr., Roger, Esther Kruse, Georgia Bartlett, Leonard, Loyal, Lawrence, Allen and Earl and 2 grandchildren Sabrina and Andrew.

Betty is survived by husband Orville, sons Dan(Pam)of Gretna, NE, Jim(Dianna)of Gretna, NE, Scott(Tina)of Cozad, NE and daughter Darla(Kevin) Aufdenkamp of Big Springs, NE, 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and several in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
