By year’s end, Mayor Jeanne McKerrigan will be the most senior member of the Scottsbluff City Council.

Last Thursday was the deadline for incumbents to file for office, and neither Jordan Colwell nor Angela Scanlan filed the requisite paperwork with the County Clerk’s office. Two years ago, council members Betsy Vidlak and Matt Salomon won election to their seats, and McKerrigan was re-elected.

As of the deadline, non-incumbent Charles Lieske was the only person to have filed for one of the two contested seats this year.

Meanwhile, Ben Backus, who ran for Gering mayor unsuccessfully two years ago, did not file for his Ward III seat on the Gering Council as of the end of the day Feb. 15. Susan Wiedeman, Michael Gillen and Troy Cowan all filed for re-election to continue representing their respective wards

Other notable filings as of the incumbent deadline included races for the Western Nebraska Regional Airport Authority, where board members Neal Smith and Bob Unzicker filed, as well as for the Scotts Bluff County Board, in which Republicans Ken Meyer and Russ Reisig filed for their party’s nominations to their respective district seats.

Non-incumbents for all races in the May primary have until the end of the business day March 1 to file candidacy paperwork.
