A 41-year-old Gering man is facing three felony forgery charges after allegedly trying to pass counterfeit $100 bills at three local businesses.

Court documents say that John Sterkel attempted to pass two counterfeit $100 bills at the Gering Dollar General earlier this month to purchase gift cards. The following day, officers made contact with him, and Sterkel claimed that the $100 bills came from an ATM at the Pony Express Mart.

The clerk at Pony Express told officers that Sterkel had failed to withdraw any cash from the ATM, and attempted to get change from the bogus bills.

The following day, Sterkel also reportedly tried to pass more counterfeit money at WTT in Scottsbluff

A warrant for his arrest on the Class 3 felonies was issued last week and returned on Friday evening. His arraignment is set for December 3rd in Scotts Bluff County Court.
