The Gering City Council has clarified zoning regulations that would help pave the way for the city’s first microbrewery.

Monday night, City Engineer Annie Folck told the council staff has been approached about possibility of a microbrewer in the downtown district zoned C-2.

Folck said while a microbrewery is a defined use in the zoning codes, it was not listed in the Land Use Table. “We could classify it as a restaurant, but it doesn’t fit really nicely in that category, so we thought the cleanest way to do this would be to update the Land Use Table,” said Folck. “And then, if anyone were to challenge their right to be there, for whatever reason, it would be clear that it is allowed in that zone, even though it isn’t quite the same as a restaurant.”

The council approved adding a microbrewery as a permitted use in the C-2 zoning for downtown, as well as in the C-3, ML and MH districts, the last two of which are industrial zones.

It was also added as a condition use allowed by permit in commercial districts zoned C-1.
