Decades of service were recognized recently as the Scottsbluff Kiwanis Club dedicated a new shelter to one of their own.
Stepping away from the organization after 27 years, Jeff Reifschneider cut the ribbon on the new shelter in the recreation area between the Riverside Discovery Center and the Trails West YMCA Camp in Scottsbluff last Thursday.
Visibly moved, Reifschneider was told by club members since he made a big impact, they had to find him a big honor. While her had been the driving force organizing the service club’s annual Christmas tree sales in recent years, he was told everything related to that had already been name, so something else had to be found. “I do appreciate it,” said Reifschneider, “it’s always been a part of the club.”
“Well, you’ve done a lot for us, we’re going to remember you a lot,” replied club member and past president Kevin Mooney, “We appreciate everything, and if you ever want to still help out, you let us know”, which drew a round of laughter, the man of the hour included. The annual Kiwanis Christmas tree lot has been responsible for helping raise thousands of dollars in scholarships for graduating high school students entering post-secondary education.
Reifschneider was a member of the service organization since 1997 serving a variety of roles, including being a member of the local Kiwanis Foundation.
The shelter bearing his name is just west of the Trails of Fun Playground. The city has committed to installing grass and a sprinkler system as part of the project.
