Fallen Nebraska firefighters’ names to be added to national memorial

Four Nebraska firefighters will be among the 144 honored during the 42nd National Fallen Firefighters Memorial this weekend.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is highlight the sacrifice of 79 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2022 and 65 firefighters who died in previous years.

Elwood Volunteer Fire Chief Darren Krull, Purdum Rural Fire Assistant Chief Michael Moody, Fairbury Rural Fire Captain Christopher Parker and Broken Bow Firefighter James Bissonnette will have their names inscribed on bronze plates added to the national memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Public activities include a candlelight service Saturday, and a memorial service Sunday, during which the NFFF presents each family with a badge, a rose and an American flag that has flown over both the memorial and the U.S. Capitol building.

The NFFF will live stream both events on the NFFF’s website (firehero.org), YouTube channel, and Facebook page.

Detailed information about the 144 firefighters being honored is included in the 2023 Roll of Honor.
