Clayton Anderson, a native of Ashland, Nebraska, applied to be a NASA astronaut 15 times before he finally got an interview. Two years later, he finally became Nebraska’s first, and so far only, astronaut.

During his time as a student at Hastings College, Anderson was accepted as one of 40 interns from a pool of 480 applicants for an internship at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

Upon completing his masters program at Iowa State University, and completing more internship experiences, he decided to take the next step in becoming an astronaut.

Anderson now leads the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum in Ashland, Nebraska.
