BROKEN BOW – The Broken Bow City Council heard from one of the candidates for the District 43 Legislative race during its regular meeting Tuesday evening.

Tanya Storer addressed the council to introduce herself and provide them with an overview of her background and experience in both agriculture and public service in addition to answering questions from council members.

Asked about the proposed EPIC Option tax, Storer expressed concerns about a lack of local control and called the proposal a “death knell to rural Nebraska.” She noted that if the initiative makes it onto the ballot, the measure voters would be deciding on provides no details on how it would be implemented, and that it would be decided in Lincoln by the Legislature.

Storer also spoke about the need for tax reform and finding ways to control and limit spending in addition to discussing housing issues.

Also during Tuesday’s meeting, Library Director Megan Svoboda informed the council that the Broken Bow Library’s hours will be shifting on April 1 to open half an hour earlier each day and close half an hour earlier every day but Friday.

The library’s new hours will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Svoboda said the Library Board had done research and determined the earlier time would likely lead to more people accessing the library.

The council also approved the appointment of Timothy Moran to the Broken Bow Housing Authority for a term running through Jan. 1, 2027 and commended the Broken Bow Fire Department for being named Nonprofit of the Year at the Broken Bow Chamber Banquet earlier this month.

Mayor Rod Sonnichsen concluded the meeting by expressing his appreciation for the city crews that put in long hours this week to help clear snow.
