The Ord Chanticleers are in the semifinals of the online competition to determine best the high school mascot in America.

The NCAA Tournament style bracket is being hosted by SBLive Sports, a high school oriented site owned by Sports Illustrated.

The Chants defeated the Yuma Criminals in the quarterfinals by more than 49,000 votes. Football coach Nate Wells spoke to KBEAR about the town’s response to the competition.

The Chanticleers are facing the Coalinga (California) Horned Toads in the semifinals.

Ord is believed to be the only high school in the country using the Chanticleers name. In the college ranks they share the mascot with Coastal Carolina.

Coalinga’s mascot name comes from the annual Horned Toad Derby the town hosts in which wild toads are captured and race on a makeshift track.

Votes for the semifinals can be cast here. The voting closes at 10:59 p.m. Central Time on May 2.
