William Jewell College held Wayne State to just two hits in recording a 10-0 win in eight innings over the Wildcats in non-conference baseball played Sunday afternoon in Liberty, Missouri. The host Cardinals take two of three games in the series and are now 3-3 while WSC falls to 3-4.
WJC righthander Jake Sawyer kept the Wildcat bats in check, holding WSC hitless until the sixth inning.
Meanwhile, the host Cardinals used a pair of three run innings in the second and third to take control of the contest.
William Jewell took a 1-0 lead in the first, added three runs in the second and three more in the third for a 7-0 cushion.
The Cardinals scored again in the fifth for an 8-0 lead.
Wayne State got its first hit of the game to start the sixth inning, a double by Quinn McCafferty. One batter later Colin Lynam was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second but the ‘Cats could not score.
Kyler Essink had the other Wildcat hit, a two-out single in the seventh.
The ‘Cats got a pair of walks to open the eighth as McCafferty and Carter Thomas reached base, but WSC could not get a hit to produce runs.
William Jewell then scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to finish with a 10-0 win in eight innings.
WJC had 11 hits to just two for WSC while the host Cardinals also took advantage of five Wildcat errors.
Junior starting pitcher Brody Sintek (0-2) suffered the loss in 2 2/3 innings. Braden Cannon pitched the next 3 1/3 innings while Dylan Rodgers (one inning) and Adam Eggert also worked out of the bullpen for the Wildcats.
Wayne State will travel to Fort Hays State in Kansas for a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
