Gering Volunteer Fire Department completed another year of hosting Western Nebraska Engine Academy (WNEA) on September 15, 2024.

Firefighters and incident management team members from six states, and 33 agencies convened on the Friday before to plan and run operations.

“This exercise is unique because it’s not a simulation, it is a prescribed burn, managed and controlled just like a real incident,” NEMA State Training Officer, Dave Reisen said.

The academy offers participants at all levels exposure to a safe learning environment, to grow skills and complete task books. The exercise is event driven, not preplanned. “Adjustments to objectives are made based on the participants needs,” Operations Section Chief, Allen Michael said. “It is task book driven and WNEA wants to meet the needs of the trainee.”

“This was a great experience, the other team members were great to work with, and patient with me while I learned.” Cellinda Howard, COML Trainee and first time WNEA participant said.

WNEA appreciates everyone who was a part of making this event successful and safe. The exercise would not be possible without personnel from local, state and federal levels. Thank you to the local agencies, Nebraska Game & Parks Commission, US Forest Service, Nebraska Emergency Management, Nebraska State Fire Marshal, Nebraska Forest Service and Nebraska National Air Guard.
