The Nebraska State Patrol is remembering an American Hero on the 5th anniversary of his passing in the line of duty. Today marks five years since Trooper Jerry Smith Jr. #373 was killed in a vehicle crash while on patrol in the Nebraska Panhandle.
“Jerry will always be our hero,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “From his dedicated career in the United States Army to his continued public service as a Nebraska Trooper, Jerry’s selfless service was incredible. As we pause today to remember his sacrifice, we draw upon his inspiration to put others ahead of ourselves and serve with honor.”
Trooper Smith joined the Nebraska State Patrol in 2014 as part of the 56th Basic Recruit Class, graduating on May 1, 2015. His entire career with NSP was spend serving the Panhandle, stationed in Scottsbluff. Prior to his service with NSP, Smith served in the United States Army from 1986 to 2011, receiving numerous honors and commendations including a Bronze Star for his service during two tours of combat in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
“Today and always, we keep Jerry’s family and friends in our hearts,” said Colonel Bolduc. “His life of service will never be forgotten.
