A man who was sentenced to decades in prison for stabbing a Lyman Police officer in 2022 has lost an appeal of his conviction and sentence.

Jeremy Torres was sentenced last October to an aggregate of 35 to 50 years in prison after a plea agreement on amended charges that included attempted first degree murder, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony and witness tampering.

Torres claimed the sentence was excessive, there should have been a competency determination before he was allowed to enter a plea, a 90-day evaluation should have taken place before sentencing and his counsel was ineffective.

The Nebraska Court of Appeals rejected all of the claims, saying the District Court did not abuse its discretion on the first three, and Torres simply could not show he was prejudiced by any performance of his trial counsel.
