State lawmakers started taking testimony Monday on a variety of measures offered during the special session that began last week.

Among those was LB 8 offered by Sen. Carol Blood, which would impose a luxury tax of 7.75 percent on motor vehicles over $50,000, jewelry over $5,000 and clothing, footwear and other specified items that cost more than $1,000.

Blood told the Revenue Committee that she introduced the measure as a conversation starter.

Blood said she was also prompted by stories of people that received pandemic assistance, only to turn around and use the money for luxury purchases.

Testimony on the three measures that make up the Governor’s plan on property taxes is began Tuesday morning.
