A pair of Cheyenne teens are behind bars after allegedly targeting Cheyenne Police with gunfire early Thursday morning.

CPD officials say around 1:15 a.m. an officer was conducting a security check near East High School, and while standing outside of his patrol vehicle, multiple shots were fired in his direction, forcing him to retreat to his vehicle and start searching for the shooter.

About 15 minutes later, another officer near the Bicycle Station on Dell Range Boulevard reported occupants of a white van were firing shots in his direction, and after following the van conducted a high-risk traffic stop near the intersection of North College and Parkview Drives.

The driver, 19-year-old William Nicholson, and 18-year-old passenger Tayren Smith were taken into custody without incident, and a search uncovered a firearm stolen out of Fort Collins and a shell casing, as well as a video of Nicholson driving and shooting out of the van window.

Both were charged with conspiracy and possession of a stolen firearm, with Nicholson facing a third charge of aggravated assault on a peace officer, and Smith a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Nicholson and Smith were lodged into the Laramie County Jail.
