The Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery Board holds a special meeting this weekend for loved ones and others with interests at the cemetery to discuss the status and future of the facility.

Board attorney Robert Brenner tells KNEB News while the financial status for operations is currently solid, there are some challenges that do need to be addressed, specifically the physical condition of the facility. “The mausoleum has roof issues and electrical issues,” said Brenner, “and of course, we do have some cement problems around the cemetery that just over time have deteriorated, streets, walkways and so forth that need to be repaired.”

Brenner the facility does not receive tax dollars, and the board and association have no intention of seeking such funding, but there are needs to address that are somewhat complicated by state law.

He explained a portion of the fees for burial or cremation interment are required to go into separate permanent care funds for the grounds and mausoleum, and there’s very little flexibility in how they can be used unless a serious emergency occurs, meaning funds held for the grounds cannot be used on the mausoleum, and vice versa.

The meeting will be held Sunday starting at 2 p.m. at the Community Room of the Platte Valley Companies facility in Scottsbluff.
