Slow Start for 10th Annual Old West Balloon Fest

Slow Start for 10th Annual Old West Balloon Fest
August 9th, 2024 | Ryan Murphy

Mother Nature has not cooperated thus far for Old West Balloon Fest festivities.

Last night’s opening night glow at Western Nebraska Community College was reduced to many pilots only ‘candlesticking’ their burners, but there were a few pilots who did have their balloons up.

This morning, the Old West Balloon Fest’s weather team determined the conditions were not safe enough for a mass ascension out at the old Mitchell Airfield.

Gates will open at 5:30 a.m. Saturday for the final mass ascension, followed by a full day of activities in downtown Mitchell, and will wrap up with the Saturday evening night glow and drone show back out at the old Mitchell Airfield.
