The Sidney Public School Board has made the decision to close an elementary school to help close a $600,000 budget gap for the coming year caused in large part by the loss of state aid.

In a letter to parents, Superintendent Andrew Farber announced the decision to close North Elementary for the 2024-25 school year, which he says was not made lightly.

Farber says additional changes will have South Elementary serving students in first through third grade only next year, and West Elementary serving grades four through six.

The decision comes on the heels of earlier school board decisions to adjust staffing levels and make other changes to help address the budget shortfall.

Farber says currently, the district is evaluating the North Elementary facility and is working to develop a plan for that property in the near future.
