Students in the construction trades at Scottsbluff High School will have the chance to learn new skills and make a mark on the MonumentAUL container home project planned for Gering.

On Wednesday, three containers with metal work and exterior paint already completed were were delivered to the school in the configuration of a one-bedroom, 480 square-foot home, next to an already completed template home.

Jake Aulick told reporters the students will do pretty much all of the rough and finish work on the inside. “Everything is going to be, from the electrical class, the new up-and-coming plumbing and HVAC class, and now the new construction class we’ve been talking about, we’re hoping we can affect anywhere from 25 to 30 kids a semester with our vocational trades and what we’re trying to accomplish… Let the kids get their hands dirty,” said Aulick.

Aulick says one of the things he really likes is that the work is being done on school grounds, meaning less travel for students, more time in training and a centralized location for building materials.

He says he’s confident the effort will have an impact similar to that of the Diesel Tech and Electrician programs, which have already had many students decide to stay not only in their field of training, but also often with a local company.
