Sen. Hardin- Nebraska Has Tax Policy Issue

Sen. Hardin- Nebraska Has Tax Policy Issue
August 20th, 2024 | Ryan Murphy

Gering Senator Brian Hardin is expressing his frustration with the drawn out special legislative session at the Nebraska Capitol.

On Friday, Hardin took to the floor and said he and his fellow lawmakers will have to come back and fix other things in the next legislative session, as the nature of the problems are far broader and deeper than property tax alone.

He says his contention has been with his constituents in District 48, and it’s that we really don’t have just a property tax problem.

“We have a tax policy problem. In fact, our tax policy in Nebraska needs a mercy killing. We really need to start over with all of it,” said Hardin. “And I think fundamentally, one of the mistakes that we’ve made is when we try to silo one kind of taxes, one kind of tax and reach into a grab bag of sales taxes to offset that.”

Tuesday marked the 17th day of the special session called by Gov. Jim Pillen.
