Scottsbluff Public Schools is observing Childhood Cancer Awareness Week this week in partnership with Team Ashtyn Foundation.

Today, students and staff were encouraged to wear gold, the official color of Childhood Cancer Awareness, to show their solidarity with those in our school community battling childhood cancer.

During last night’s Scottsbluff City Council meeting, Jeanne Anderson addressed the council about why this issue is important to her and her family.

“Honored to be here representing all the childhood cancer angels, survivors and fighters in our area. Our son Walker is a leukemia survivor,” said Anderson. “He was diagnosed in 2019 and completed chemo in 2021. Since his diagnosis, our realization of how unrecognized and unresearched child cancer is. I have made it a mission of mine to raise awareness and support for this terrible disease.”

The SHS Football Team will partner with the Team Ashtyn Foundation during Friday’s game vs. Lincoln Northwest, where Gold vinyl ribbons will be worn on the helmets of both teams.

During halftime, local families affected by Childhood Cancer will speak, and SHS HOSA Members will be handing out orange and gold balloons, with names of local children battling cancer, to be released after the first touchdown is scored.

Also during Tuesday’s council meeting, Scottsbluff Mayor Jeanne McKerrigan read a proclamation for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
