There were some key high school basketball games last night in town and we had both Scottsbluff and Gering doubleheaders on the Rural Radio Network-Scottsbluff.

All games key this time of year for teams that are in the hunt for postseason play.

Scottsbluff splits at home vs. North Platte

The boys game was a thriller last night at SHS with North Platte beating the Bearcats 55-54 on a River Johnston free throw with :1.1 left on the clock in the game. Johnston was fouled on a shot right before the buzzer and the one make at the line sent North Platte to their 9th straight win.

Johnston led all scorers with 29 points. Scottsbluff freshman Nate Kelley finished with a team high 24 in the loss including the Scottsbluff’s first nine points of the fourth quarter when they rallied from down nine to get even before eventually falling one point short.

In the girls game it was all Scottsbluff, especially out of the locker room in the third quarter. They led by nine at halftime and then scored 19 points in the third to go up by 20+ before North Platte rallied a good bit in the fourth to tighten up the final score.

Paige Horne scored 10 of her team high 23 in that third quarter as Scottsbluff won their 17th game of the season.

Scottsbluff will have a home doubleheader today against McCook with the boys game tipping first at 4 pm with the girls Senior Night game to follow. Coverage on 107.3 The Trail and KHYYfm.com will start at 3:45 pm.

Gering comes up with sweep over McCook

The big game at Gering last night was the boys contest as Gering was 12th in power points and McCook entered at 10th in the standings.

McCook led by seven at halftime but then Gering put together a dominant second half performance to win it going away by the final of 63-46.

Max Greeley continued his offensive tear with a game high 26 points in the win while his running mate, Uriah Ybarra, finished with 17 points as the Bulldogs improved to 11-9 this season. The two teams wake up today tied for 10th in power points.

The Gering girls meanwhile picked up a much needed win. After dropping 14 of their prior 15 games the Lady Bulldogs knocked off McCook 49-47 behind a big game from Neveah Hrasky, who finished with a team leading 23 points.

Gering will be at home again tonight with a split doubleheader. The boys will open against Leyton at 5 pm and then the Gering girls will take on North Platte in the late game.
