A large number of area first responders participated in a mass casualty training event at Western Nebraska Regional Airport Saturday.

Agencies directly involved in the training included Boy Scouts of America, Scottsbluff Rural, Minatare/Melbeta, Yoder, and Banner County Fire Departments, Regional West Emergency Deptartment, Airlink, Western Nebraska Regional Airport ARFF, and Regional West EMS.

Hunter Maglitto told KNEB News there were at least 93 participants, with the exercise including the firefighting element, but also with a focus on the EMS response.

Patients were assesed and placed into a color coded triage area based on severity of injuries.

A large pile of debris was lit on fire on the west side of the airport, producing a large column of black smoke, and the victims were located in a nearby school bus, which simulated the aircraft fuselage.
